$577K 1910 Locomobile Type I (Model 40) Seven-Passenger Touring
A rare green 1910 Locomobile Type I (Model 40) Seven-Passenger Touring car arriving at and leaving the 2025 Holiday Motor Excursion presented by the Horseless Carriage Club (HCCA) of Southern California. This car, chassis no. 3715, was the third Type I built and was displayed by Locomobile at the Chicago Auto Show. It is powered by a 471-ci T-Head inline 4-cylinder engine producing 40 horsepower mated to a 4-speed manual transaxle. Previously owned by J. Ervin Smith, president of the Continental National Bank of Indianapolis, and Otis Chandler, publisher of the Los Angeles Times, it was restored in the 1960s and retains its original bodywork including fenders, hood, floor, and running boards. The car was sold for $577,000 at the Stan Lucas Collection Auction by Gooding Christie’s in September 2025.
In January 2025 the antique car world mourned the loss of Stan Lucas, a regular attendee of the annual Holiday Motor Excursion. In September his prized collection of pristine vehicles was auctioned off, but I had a feeling a good number of the cars would still call Southern California home. And I'm glad to know now that at least a few of them are now part of the ever-growing Singleton Collection, including this beautiful Locomobile. I've seen several examples of the popular and highly sought-after Model 48, but this was my first time encountering an older model like this. No less amazing than its classy styling is its incredible condition. And given its current owners' unwavering dedication to maintaining concours-condition classics, I have a feeling this car will continue looking good as new for many years to come.
On a side note, for those who don't know, crank-starting a car can be quite a workout!
