1970 Plymouth Road Runner Superbird (w/ startup)

A rare orange (Vitamin C) 1970 Plymouth Road Runner Superbird starting up and leaving Cars and Cocktails at Auto Addiction OC. Based on the Plymouth Road Runner, the Superbird was a homologation special for the 1970 NASCAR season featuring dramatically revised bodywork with an aerodynamic nose cone, pop-up headlights, and large rear wing. Parent company Chrysler purchased the rights to use the Road Runner cartoon character logo and horn sound from Warner Bros. It is generally believed that 1,935 Superbirds were built, around 1,000 of which still exist. Production ended after only one year due to slow sales and revised NASCAR regulations.

This car looks every bit as cartoonish as the logo on the side of that huge wing. But its exaggerated styling also makes it stand out from just about anything else (except maybe for the similarly wild Dodge Charger Daytona, which I have yet to encounter in person). Of course, it was all done in the name of aerodynamics, which proves once again why homologation rules have resulted in some of the coolest road-legal cars ever built. Those who recognize the car know it as an extreme creation of the muscle car era with an interesting history. Those who don't might look at you like you're from another planet. Either way, I'm glad the owners of this example enjoy driving it regularly and bringing it out to events for others to appreciate.

Do you like the exaggerated aerodynamic styling of the Superbird? Leave a comment on YouTube and let me know!
