1981 DeLorean DMC-12 Factory Prototype w/ “Back to the Future” Interior
A 1981 DeLorean DMC-12 leaving Wings 'N Wheels at Cable Airport. Designed by Giorgetto Giugiaro and built by DeLorean Motor Company, the car was made popular through the “Back to the Future” film series starring Michael J. Fox and Christopher Lloyd. This example is a factory pre-production prototype built in March 1981 and now has a modified interior featuring movie-inspired time machine switchgear.
October 26th is a day that every "Back to the Future" fan is familiar with, so what better day to post a car that will forever be associated with the iconic film series? As you can clearly see from the interior, the owner of this DeLorean (like pretty much every DeLorean owner) is a "Back to the Future" fan. But despite decking out the interior with movie memorabilia including time machine switchgear, he opted to leave the bodywork alone without adding all the time machine bits that most would agree make it too flashy for actual street driving. Of course, even with the stock exterior, nearly everyone who sees it would immediately think "hey, that's the Back to the Future car!". I had a great chat with the owner who told me after I asked about the unusually clean wheels that the car originally came with mismatched wheels, which was what led him to discover that it was actually a factory prototype not intended for production. But that only adds to its already great appeal!
Would you add "Back to the Future" time machine upgrades to this car's bodywork to match its interior? Leave a comment on YouTube and let me know!
