Jay Leno's Brand New 2025 Ford Mustang GTD

Based on the seventh-generation (S650) Mustang, the GTD is the fastest and most powerful production Mustang with a top speed of 202 mph and a 5.2-liter supercharged V8 engine producing 815 horsepower and 664 lb-ft of torque. In May 2025, a GTD driven by Dirk Müller lapped the Nürburgring Nordschleife with a time of 6:52.072, over 5.5 seconds faster than its previous attempt in August 2024 which made it the first car from an American manufacturer to complete a lap in under seven minutes. This example, car no. 12, is finished in Lightning Blue with optional Performance Pack and titanium exhaust and was delivered to Leno in July 2025.

I was quite surprised that Leno decided to bring his new GTD to this year's San Marino Motor Classic since he usually shows up at the event in a classic car. But it's definitely something that bridges gaps between the many classes of cars that were on display. It's brand new yet wears a nameplate with rich heritage. It's all American muscle but also no less exotic supercar. For nearly everyone attending the show, this was probably their first time encountering a GTD. I'm gonna be honest, I still think this car's overall design looks a little incohesive and tacky, and I find it hard to justify choosing it over a Corvette ZR1/ZR1X. But for those who are loyal to Ford/Mustangs and those who prefer a beefed-up muscle car over a wedge-shaped supercar, this is about as good as it gets - assuming you have an extra $330K to spend. And with Ford and Chevy continuing to 1-up each other by sending increasingly powerful and expensive variants of their staple performance cars to the Nürburgring, it will be interesting to see how the Blue Oval will continue to push the Mustang's performance boundaries.
