New $1.5M Scarbo Vintage SV Rover Street-Legal Hypertruck
A new yellow 2024 Scarbo Vintage SV Rover leaving "Prebble", a Pre-Monterey (Pre-Pebble Beach) gathering at Oakley headquarters presented by Ancillary Studios in collaboration with HyperSociety. Introduced in February 2024, the SV Rover is the third model from California-based Scarbo Vintage and is described by the company as "the world's first street-legal Hypertruck". It features carbon fiber and aluminum bodywork inspired by the Land Rover Defender, 20-inch forged wheels with 40-inch tires, four-wheel steering, inboard pushrod suspension with 30 inches of wheel travel, front and rear locking differentials, and a 65-gallon fuel tank. The two-seat Alcantara interior features billet aluminum accents, a 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster, and a 12.8-inch display. This example, a factory demo car, is powered by a rear-mid-mounted 6.2-liter GM LT4 supercharged V8 engine producing 1,100 horsepower mated to a GM 8-speed automatic transmission with paddle shifters. The SV Rover has a starting price of $1.5 million and is also available with a 750-kW electric powertrain.
Several small automakers have built road-legal cars with the sole purpose of achieving maximum off-road performance. (The Arial Nomad and Local Motors Rally Fighter come to my mind first.) Many aftermarket shops specialize in modifying existing SUVs and pickup trucks to do the same. But here's a vehicle that takes the hardcore off-roading genre to a new level where the sky's the limit and money isn't a problem, similar to what companies like Bugatti and Koenigsegg already do in the supercar world. It's unfortunate that this beast didn't get to park in the main area of the show alongside all the million-dollar hypercars given that its power figures and price tag certainly prove it worthy. Had I known more about it beforehand, I certainly would have made more effort to spend time in the corner where it was displayed before it passed by me on the way out. This vehicle is everything you'd expect from an all-terrain race truck taken to the extreme with its monstrous wheels, insanely wide fenders, and powerful engine. Its Land Rover-inspired design only magnifies its exaggerated proportions. (By the way, those wide fenders actually move with the last several inches of wheel travel. I'd love to see that in action!) And just for the heck of it, the engine is placed in back and the whole truck painted bright yellow as if it were a Lambo.
Let's admit it, though, $1.5 million is a lot of money, especially for something from a relatively little-known company that's too large for regular driving/parking and catered to only the most affluent clients in a niche market. It's certainly a cool truck with numbers to back up its looks, but only time will tell if enough customers will fork up the money to buy one.
