One-Off BAC Mono R Monterey Edition
A very rare 2023 BAC Mono R Monterey Edition arriving at and leaving "Prebble", a Pre-Monterey (Pre-Pebble Beach) gathering at Oakley headquarters presented by Ancillary Studios in collaboration with HyperSociety. Built by Liverpool-based Briggs Automotive Company (BAC), the Mono R is the first production car to use graphene-enhanced carbon fiber bodywork. It has a dry weight of 555 kg and is powered by a 2.5-liter naturally aspirated four-cylinder Mountune engine producing 343 horsepower. The bespoke Monterey Edition, built for BAC's display during 2024 Monterey Car Week and inspired by the heritage and landscape of Monterey, is finished in Lone Cypress Brown exposed carbon fiber with diamond-dusted coating, Carmel Bay Bronze accents, and an embroidered Lone Cypress headrest emblem. This car is one of 30 Mono Rs built and is currently listed for sale at Newport Beach Automotive Group (BAC Newport Beach) for $434,900.
Back in 2013 I attended the U.S. public debut of the BAC Mono. While there were already other cars on the market that were essentially street-legal race cars, the Mono was in a class of its own with a single-seat layout and bodywork that was no less sensual than it was functional. Of course, BAC has made various updates in performance and styling over the years. But the basic formula remains the same, and over a decade later, the single-seat Mono still looks like pretty much nothing else on the road.
This is the perfect car to post during Car Week as it's a one-off inspired by none other than the region of Monterey. From the color choice to the carbon weave, not to mention all the exposed technical bits, the attention to detail is simply incredible. If I had this car, I would be torn on whether to use it as a show car (and fail to let it reach its performance potential) or a track car (and risk damaging the bespoke styling). But I probably shouldn't worry about that until after I figure out how to come up with a spare half million dollars!
