Rare 1936 Singer Nine Le Mans Tourer

A rare white 1936 Singer Nine (Singer 9) Le Mans Tourer with red fenders, wheels, and interior leaving the 2021 San Marino Motor Classic at Lacy Park. Built by Coventry-based Singer Motors Limited, originally founded in 1874 by George Singer as bicycle manufacturer Singer & Co Limited, the Le Mans was a high-performance version of the Nine powered by an upgraded 972-cc inline-four engine producing 34 horsepower.

Most people today who are aware of Singer as a name in the automotive world probably associate it with expensive limited-production restomod Porsches. But there was another Singer that existed well over a century ago, one that began in the bicycle and motorcycle business before eventually producing four-wheeled automobiles. This was my first time seeing a Singer or hearing of the brand, and after doing some research I was surprised that Singer-badged cars were produced through as late as around 1970. Either I'd been living under a rock for far too long, or the brand must have been much better known in the U.K. or other non-U.S. markets. But as always, I'm glad to have an opportunity to expand my automotive knowledge, not to mention see a car that most people, at least here in the States, have never seen or heard of.
