Rare 1952 Jowett Jupiter
A rare red 1952 Jowett Jupiter arriving at and leaving the 2025 San Marino Motor Classic at Lacy Park. Introduced as a complete car at the British Automobile and Motorcycle Show in New York in April 1950, the Jupiter, built by Jowett Cars Ltd. in Idle, near Bradford, England, combined an open sports car body with the powertrain of the Javelin saloon, including a 1486-cc Jowett flat four engine producing around 60 horsepower mated to a 4-speed manual transmission. This example is one of around 900 Jupiters built between 1950 and 1954.
The world of classic British sports cars offers enthusiasts a wide variety of choices, but for those who are tired of the usual MGs and Triumphs at local car events, here's something worth considering. I love how this car's owner naturally said the car's name while arriving at the show. He probably figured, unsurprisingly, that chances are people have no clue what the heck it is. I had only heard of the car because as a child I was given an old car magazine that happened to have an article about it, and it wasn't until 2022 that I actually encountered my first Jupiter at another event. This car combines the classic flowing lines of its contemporaries with a small and economical size. It may not be particularly powerful or fast, but it sure makes people smile.
