A rare black 1964 Alfa Romeo Giulia TZ-1, one of 112 built, arriving at Macchinissima II at the Los Angeles River Center and Gardens. Introduced at the 1962 Turin Auto Show, the first-generation TZ (Tubolare Zagato) was based on the Alfa Romeo Giulia and featured a tubular spaceframe chassis and aluminum bodywork by Zagato. This example, chassis no. 016, participated frequently in Sports Car Club of America (SCCA) racing and was owned and driven by Nadeene Brengle who finished second in class at the 1966 American Road Race of Champions (ARRC). It was later driven at the 1996 Monterey Historics and displayed at the 1996 Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance. The car was restored and returned to its 1966 SCCA condition and livery under its current owner, who then displayed it at the 2019 Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance and participated in the Tour d'Elegance of which it was one of the poster cars.

This car was built for racing, but it would certainly be just as competitive in a beauty pageant. The sleek Zagato bodywork makes it hard to believe that it was a purpose-built race car based on Alfa's humble Giulia. That rear end's resemblance to an Aston Martin grille is hard to unsee, but it sure is sexy. This particular car has a rich racing history from a time when female representation in the sport was minimal and seldom successful. And any car invited to the famed Pebble Beach lawn multiple times is worthy of recognition. What a treat to get to see and hear it in person!
