Rare Bugatti EB110 in Beverly Hills
A rare silver (Grigio Chiaro) 1994 Bugatti EB110 GT from the Petersen Automotive Museum, one of 139 EB110s built by Bugatti Automobili S.p.A. between 1991 and 1995, driving in Beverly Hills after the 2023 Rodeo Drive Concours d'Elegance. Unveiled on September 15, 1991, what would have been founder Ettore Bugatti's 110th birthday, the EB110 GT is powered by a quad-turbocharged V12 engine producing 553 horsepower mated to a six-speed manual transmission. It was one of the fastest production cars of its time with a top speed of around 210 mph.
When talking about '90s supercars/hypercars, everbody thinks of the McLaren F1 or the Ferrari F40 and F50. Bugatti didn't really make its way into the modern spotlight until the Veyron entered production in 2005 under Volkswagen ownership, and prior to that it was best known for its race cars back in the '30s. Bugatti Automobili S.p.A., established by Romano Artioli in 1987, only lasted for seven short years before succumbing to challenging economic conditions. But during that time it managed to bring to market this one single production model.
I'll never forget flipping through a new car buyer's guide magazine as a ten-year-old and stumbling upon a black-and-white photo of the EB110. I knew nothing about car pricing or horsepower figures at the time, but it was clear the EB110 was in a league of its own - the most powerful and expensive car in the entire magazine. The EB110 was also one of my first diecast scale models, which I still have today. Needless to say, this car holds a special place in my heart. I personally love its design, quirky as it is, especially with the base ("GT") model wheels. Its shape is a surprisingly effective fusion of curvy and edgy that has aged well. And I love how Bugatti incorporated that tiny version of its famous horseshoe grille up front just to make sure people didn't mistake it for a Ferrari or Lamborghini. Here in Southern California, Veyrons and Chirons aren't particularly hard to find and even pre-war Bugattis make regular appearances at car events. But there's definitely nothing like a good ol' EB110, and I'm so glad to have caught this one.
