Rare Shelby Series 1 in Glendora Christmas Parade

A rare Centennial Silver Metallic 1999 Shelby Series 1 driving in the 2024 Glendora Christmas Parade. Introduced at the 1997 Los Angeles Auto Show, the Series 1 was designed by Carroll Shelby and built in partnership with General Motors. Intended to be a modern interpretation of the Shelby Cobra, it is powered by a 4.0-liter Oldsmobile L47 Aurora V8 engine with an optional supercharger. This example, chassis no. CSX 5078, is one of 249 Series 1s originally built by Shelby American, Inc. (Additional "component cars" were built in 2005 by Shelby Automobiles, Inc.)

It's not surprising to see Ford Model As, '50s American classics, and various muscle cars at city-sponsored festivities. But I was blown away when this rare Shelby appeared from the distance. Several renowned customization and tuning companies have taken on the challenge of building a brand new car under their name - think Saleen S7, Foose Coupe, and Hennessey Venom F5. And while these cars generally remain quite rare, they serve as proof that their builders are capable of more than just tweaking existing cars. The Series 1 was Shelby's attempt at creating its own clean-slate supercar. It may not have been as commercially successful as anticipated, but it remains an important part of the company's history and a special sight for anyone who recognizes it. I'm glad the owner of this example is willing to put some miles on it and help add some more holiday cheer to an already festive parade. Have a wonderful Christmas and thanks for joining me for another year of car spotting adventures!

Would you drive this rare Shelby in a Christmas parade? Leave a comment and let me know!
